Riding along Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way In August, 2022, an opportunity arose for me to spend 3 weeks bike touring starting at Heathrow Airport. As I didn't have a lot of time to plan this trip, I fell back on a tour I'd partially planned before the pandemic but abandoned when the world shutdown.

I'd decided to minimize the air travel, both to be more Covid-safe and to try and prevent losing my bike to airplane checked baggage roulette. This suggested a trip either in the UK or nearby. Since I already had a head start on designing a trip to Ireland, I opted to travel on land from Heathrow to Ireland using a train, my bike, and a ferry.

Since I was short on time, I decided to take several buses between places to maximize my biking time in the more interesting places. It is hard to say this was a wise decision as taking buses not only takes time but limit where and when one can go. I'll discuss my conclusions about this in an entry below.

As I had been to Ireland before, albeit without a bicycle, there were some things I decided not to visit, such as the Cliffs of Moher. But, it did make me want to spend time in Connemara, up north of Galway. Both of these thoughts guided my planning. You can see my touring plans for this trip, for more details about where I stayed and other information.

I used ridewithGPS.com to record my daily routes. A link that day's route is provided in each day's journal entry.
